Spirituality in Guitar

While this may be a very controversial topic for some, other may find it very enlightening, I myself come from a strong Christian background, mixed with a little eastern beliefs, as well as a few other sects of the churches in America, I feel as though I am one with a guitar when I play it, hold it, or even hear it…

I am what I like to call, religiously diversified, meaning simply I believe in a few things, yet it is not as simple as stating that I am a religious person, “religion” can exist for people without faith or belief, for instance, the heroin addict, religiously shoots poison into their system, habitual criminals, act religiously, so religion to me is a matter of being repetitive, or among those in a building in worship, and I do not wish to get into the topics of churches, and whether or not who is right and who is not. Churches, are often businesses and can only really do so much of the work for you, you have to have faith, and communication with your higher power in any event.
Music, in many beliefs, comes from a higher power, I myself know what I believe, and that is that it is direct contact, with higher power, in my case, God, of the Christian faith, and also a great part of my Chi, or balance. If I don’t play for some amount of time, I do not feel balanced any longer, and all at the same time, it is my best possible therapy, helping me to cope with losses, failure, and life in general. The more I grow in my spirit and music, the better I feel and relate to it. This is not to say my music is my church, only that it is such a deep thing for me, that there are definite similarities. It could be called an addiction just as easily.

One of the things I noticed right away on this site, were the mentioning of meditational ideas, or spirituality in guitar, and it is nice that others are aware of that, and if you do not get the concept of those terms or ideas, I urge you to research it and discover the power to be tapped within. Music really is a blessing to so many, it has a way of helping people cope, and better understand emotions and feelings that happen everyday for so many.

Think about how many times you have heard a song, and thought to your self, “I know exactly what that means” or “man I just had a day like that” or even to take a journey with the song, to another place or time and experience a peaceful moment in todays world of extreme busy lifestyles and complications.

A great influence told me once,

“You have to eat, sleep, breathe, s*#t, drink, love, and be one with your guitar, dream about playing for an audience so large, you cannot see the end of the arena, and then, dream about taking them into your music, and throwing them into outer space, then slowly reeling them back in, because that is what it is all about”

Yes he was on drugs, but it made so much sense to me, and still does, and this was a tired drug worn man that could play Hendrix like Hendrix himself, but chose to piss it away in the bars later, so while his advice was no good to him, it has served me well so far, and now I am passing it to any who will see it and use it.

Feel free to discuss this topic, I would definitely like to hear some responses.

till next time, peace out.

Hey, I completely agree with you! Music is a very spiritual experience…not only does it scientifically have the capability to soften or accellerate heart rate and brain activity, resulting in either relieved or high stress levels, but it is like another language. Just as words portray concepts, but are not ACTUALLY the concept itself, music portrays concepts as well, in a more abstract way.
Thanks for the article, it was very enlightening!
