Hello Fellow Guitarists!

I am session guitarist from NY now living in CT.

I started playing at 6, sightreading right off the bat. That’s how I was taught, so I just believed everyone started that way! I could pretty much sight read anything within a few years, and that aided me in becoming a session guy later in life. I took lessons from anyone I could and was fortunate enough to have some wonderful instructors. I took some lessons with John Scofield, Joe Pass, and Alan DeMausse. Even though I wasn’t a jazz player at the time, and wanted to be a rock player, I just figured if I could learn some of the complexities of Jazz, I could incorporate that into my rock stuff. One of my few moments of illumination!

Many people ask how you get started in session work.

Keep reading to find out how Ron did it. And while you are reading listen to his song Sinner’s Swing!

Sinner’s Swing

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

I was lucky. Geography, being in NY, and luck played a key role. I was in a band that also owned a studio, and I was asked to play a solo on a song for an R&B group that was recording at the studio. I guess I did OK, and was asked to do more. You are only as good as your last session, so I tried to always do my best, suggest parts when appropriate, and not be anything less than professional. Show up on time, have solid gear, be healthy, and be in the moment. (Quite zen that last part). Oh, and NO ATTITUDES!! The studio is stressful enough!

I’ve played many jingle sessions, and even now I not only play them but have written a few. I’ve “ghosted” for a few people that shall remain nameless, but they get the credit and I got the money! I’ve played sessions in every style, from pop to jazz. Won a Connecticut CMA award for best modern country recording. Most sessions are not for major artists, but for small label or indie artist’s. These I like the best. They are usually more casual and always alot of fun!

BTW, another question I get asked, is it necessary to sightread to be a session guy….
Well, yes and no. However, the ability to sightread enables you to accept work that others cannot! I’ve doubled bass parts, played classical pieces, and have the ability to write out harmony lines for my parts immediately instead of struggling to figure out a part.

These days, the sessions come in from all over and I never have to leave my studio! I have many clients from Nashville to Florida to California and even as far away as Italy and China! It’s not unusual to find my schedule balancing as many as 20 sessions or more per week! (The studio guitarist scene may not exist anymore, but the occupation certainly exists, especially if you own a killer home studio!)

As far as gear: here goes…my main guitars are a 1974 Strat, 2006 Highway One, Ibanez RG2550 and RG121. I have many amps, but usualy use either my floor Pod XT, or my Johnson!(No jokes!!) Plus, I like to say I play the studio! Plugins and processors are my friends!
I use and LOVE NUENDO, Universal Audio Plugins, Mostly work on a PC. I do own a Mac and Pro Tools but have no love for either! I just use PT for transferring projects that come in right into Nuendo.

I’ve been doing this for many years. Now I am feeling the need for a change and am currently recording a solo guitar project. My main reason is that, even though I get to play all the time, I am RARELY allowed to play the way I believe the part should be played. There’s alot of limited imagination out there! As you can imagine…it can be quite frustrating! Most often I hear the same complaint, and I QUOTE: “Sure, that’s some great playing, but who am I going to get to replay the part?” It feels like I have to cater to the lowest common denominator! I want to push the guitar into the spotlight and play as best as I can, but most just want simplicity. Guess I’ll have to learn how to play standing up again!

To hear some tracks, stop by my myspace page and send friend request.
Here’s the URL: www.myspace.com/ronzabrockiguitar

I look forward to hearing from anyone who wants to contact me, and would like to thank my new friend Jeff for this opportunity!

Peace

Ron Z

Ron rocks…and any CD he makes I’ll buy! I got the pleasure to work with him and I’d do it again in a heartbeat! What a great guy! Go Ron!

Ron Zabrocki Fact: Ron has rocked so hard that some of his music went back in time and was heard by Beethoven, who later went deaf because of it!

  • 6 Les July // Feb 13, 2008 at 1:48 pm

Not to date myself or Ron, but we have been friends since the day we met in 1978 @ Queens College. The first time we played, we played for hours without speaking a word. It just happened to be that we both knew practically every rock song ever written and proceeded to play them ALL, with the accuracy of two guys who had been playing together for years. An instant mutual respect and friendship was solidified at that moment and continues to this day, although I have not seen him for many moons. Ron Z. IS the consumate professional and the only guitarist anyone would ever need, for ANY situation.

  • 7 Ray Balconis // Feb 13, 2008 at 1:53 pm

Some of my most profound moments of listening to music were while listening to this guy play guitar … he truly is a world-class guitarist in league with the very best of them . This sample here only provides a glimmer of what Ron is capable of. So glad to be seeing him devoting time to this again – keep your ears out for him, I am ready for more profound musical moments!!!

  • 8 Patrick Howley // Feb 13, 2008 at 2:07 pm

So that’s what you’ve been doing in the basement all these years!!!

  • 9 Michael Zabrocki // Feb 13, 2008 at 2:22 pm

OK – he’s my brother – and he’s a genius but if you ever have the distinct honor and priviledge to work with him – don’t let HIM know that YOU know he’s a genius (or guitar god/producer) – EVER…..trust me.

Oh yeah – and mom always liked him best. (Oh yeah – I also took a bath with him when we were two years old. Scarred me for life.)

All the best Ron. Nice article!

After having hung out with Ron only once I knew he was a pretty awesome guy. But after having heard his music, I found a deep respect for him not only as a person but also as a musician.

Nice article Ron and I wish you all the best!

Ron is a true genius! IF there is one person you had to call he’s the man. Any project he puts his hand on you can be sure when it is done it will be GREAT. He’s got the Midas touch.
I can’t say enough about him. Great guitarist, producer, musician, singer, and oh yeah friend.

    All the best Maestro

  • 14 Heather Arzberger // Feb 13, 2008 at 3:45 pm

Y’all keep watching this guy now… that’s my old teacher! Oh yeah, and my uncle.

It’s totally true what he says about sightreading here. It gets you work, people. Do your homework now, and enjoy it later when you can afford all the toys you will be compelled to buy as a guitarist.

  • 15 Jeff // Feb 13, 2008 at 3:52 pm

Oh man I laughed pretty hard at this:
“Ron Zabrocki Fact: Ron has rocked so hard that some of his music went back in time and was heard by Beethoven, who later went deaf because of it!”

    and this:
“Oh yeah – I also took a bath with him when we were two years old. Scarred me for life.”

    Haha!

  • 16 Mo® // Feb 13, 2008 at 4:04 pm

What’s the difference between God and a Guitarist? God doesn’t think he is a guitarist! But Ron is both.

  • 17 Anthony. P. // Feb 13, 2008 at 4:15 pm

Ron is simply the best! Not only a great guitarist, but a great all around musician. He can do it all. I love the guy! Kudo’s to you Z!

  • 18 Michael Zabrocki // Feb 13, 2008 at 4:47 pm

This MO person dropped the ball hard – MO – PAT ATTENTION. DO NOT EVER LET RON KNOW THAT YOU KNOW!!!!!!!

Ron may already have begun his attack – at the minimum – he is waiting – waiting. Be afraid.

I’ve gotten to know Ron only thru myspace, but i feel he’s a real pal. In my wildest dreams, I couldn’t even think of the things he plays, let alone play them. A real talent.

Ron is a guitar Zen master. Really, I love to play the guitar, but compared to Ron I feel very, very inadequate.

    Great article!

    Hi Unc,

Good job! Time to celebrate… the hot chocolate (or some other tasty beverage that will not inhibit my homework-doing skills) will flow tonight! ^_^

  • 22 Mark Bacino // Feb 13, 2008 at 5:50 pm

Ron Z is one of the best guitarists and all around musicians I’ve ever met. I’ve had the distinct pleasure of making two records with the man and although I nearly drove him crazy during both projects, everything came out sounding great…and he still talks to me! He’s one of the good ones.

And oh, did I mention he makes a great, great cup of tea?

Work with him, buy his records, drink his tea, you won’t be sorry.

  • 23 Frank Montana // Feb 13, 2008 at 7:05 pm

I started workin with Ron when i was seventeen, I am now thirty and still haven’t come across a better guitarist than him. Go out and buy his cd you won’t be disappointed.

  • 24 Laz // Feb 13, 2008 at 7:10 pm

Ron has been the greatest teacher I have ever had…

I only had a few official lessons in old Ozone Park Studio, but those lessons gave me the foundation of the tools I will carry in my repertoire the rest of my musical career.

One of these days, a few friends of mine, are gonna visit Ronnie and give him a long overdue X-mas gift of some “EAT ME – RON Z” Picks.

    Thanks be to Ron.

  • 28 Aric Friedman // Feb 13, 2008 at 8:38 pm

Mastering the guitar is almost impossible, as we all well know. Ron has done that, and we all agree. But, so far, nobody has mentioned that Ron is an amazing recording engineer, a constructive critic, who has helped countless musicians “make it” in the business, and proficient at many other instruments (if I make a comment about the “male organ” will this comment get banned? we shall see!). Ron has been my teacher, mentor and thru the years became a great friend. There is nobody like him, a true talent and friend.

  • 29 Jeremy // Feb 13, 2008 at 8:39 pm

I’ve known Ron for a few years and have had the pleasure of working with him several times. The results are never less than amazing! He’s always willing to share his knowledge and experience. Even his gear!

I’ve learned more from Ron in the few times I’ve worked with him than I think HE even knows!! He’s a scary good guitarist, a great producer and a wonderful friend.

    Cheers Ron!!!

  • 31 WERNER SOMMER // Feb 13, 2008 at 11:33 pm

Besides the fact that Ron is a TREMENDOUS all-around musical talent, he’s also one of the nicest people I’ve ever met. He’s always there to help in any situation, whenever you need him; and he always makes you feel hopeful, even when things seem completely hopeless! (Must be the Rosicrucian thing…)
He’d give the shirt off his back for you, no questions asked.
On a personal note,Ron’s helped me through some of the most difficult times of my life, and I can’t thank him enough.
Before this gets too sentimental….. I must confess…I, too, bathed with him…we were about 32…maybe one too many Bush Mills…or was it the baked clams on the flange….
    Love ya Bro!

    Hey, nice article!!

It’s been many years since I studied with Ron back in NY, but I’ll never forget some of the classic lines, especially my favorite:
“You haven’t even begin to suck!”

Hehe, thanks for the inspiration Ron!

  • 34 Mike O'Kane // Feb 14, 2008 at 5:18 am

I knew a lot of great guitar players growing up in Queens. Ron was the best of them. He was always a great friend as well. I wish him the best.

  • 36 KYLESPHERE // Feb 14, 2008 at 6:25 am

Not only is he the best producer out there, but probably the best guitarist I’ve seen in the flesh. To hear the songs is one thing, but you have to see him play to get the the true Zabrocki experience. Oh, and he makes REALLY good coffee and has an exceptional taste in beer. Quality characteristics for any man!

  • 37 Walker // Feb 14, 2008 at 7:03 am

Ron’s musical resume is too amazing to discuss in a paragraph…..Having worked with him is both a pleasure and a humbling experience. Just when you think you have it all figured out, he provides you with another option. In order to grasp the genius of his playing check out the range of styles he plays on “Bar-Humbug” or the songs on his myspace….great player …period.

  • 38 Joe Hand // Feb 14, 2008 at 7:13 am

    Favorite Ron Quotes—

    “Mmmm Starbucks”
“Go home……just kidding I think we got it that time”

I’m Ron’s father in law and my comment is one big weh, heh. Weh, heh, is a family expression which I have used to the amusement of the family for many years and I have given it many meanings. In this case it means I consider myself very fortunate and privileged to have Ron as my son in law. I think he is a great guitarist and a great person and I love his music.

Ok. So maybe your not worthy. But Ron is a hell of a talented guitarist.

You know Ron, if you spent a little less time watching the Simpsons, and a little more time rehearsing, I really think that you could have a future playing the guitar.

At any rate, it looks like you’re off to a good start. All the best!

    P.S. I can’t stand show offs……………

I met Ronny a number of years ago through an Italian immigrant cook who was recording some country songs in Ron’s old basement studio (long funny story… I’d love to write a script about it some day). Besides being one of the most talented musicians I’ve ever met, Ron is one of those people that can get you laughing at every turn. He is one of the nicest and most positive people I know. I wish you all the best and much success with your new release. You deserve it Ronny!

I first met Ron Z. back in the late 50′s in Nawlins at a juke joint west of the Mississip. He was layin down some steamin licks for Ol’ Blind HoneyDew Lemon Drop Stevens, when I stumbled in and my ears blew open with dat Rockin Zabrockin Zound!I was there to put down some backround harms for Fats Checkersberg AND the MESHUGGATONES,(a Jewish soul singer whos latest hit was,”Stop Schelppin my heart around.”)You remember?Dont cha?Anyway..I dEgress..my ears snapped offa my head when I heard Ron’s greasy, messy, wet, fried,oh wait a sec, dat’s right we were eating some chicken..it was the late 50′s and my memory is not as “sharp”..RON ZABROCKI IS THE BEST FRIGGAN GITAR player, producer, musicman there is, I know! As many sessions as we have done, (I got youu SAVED!) I cant tell you when I had a better time..Well..there was this sweet Grandma I met at a Beach Channel civic center…she played a rusty trombone…
    Love ya Ron, Barry

This man taught me everything I know about guitar, recording, being a great person. In life’s adventure he has put me on course everything I do in music is because of Ron. My teacher, my mentor, my friend.

Zabrocki Studios is dedicated to ultimate customer satisfaction! Ron is an extraordinary guitarist and a multifaceted musical recording engineer! He has been extremely generous with his time and has yet to leave me dissatisfied.

Congrats on your current success — I remember what fun we had years ago working with Robbie Sambat & Tanya Lowell, on my songs, including “Who Knows the Wind?” in 1993 in your old studio in Queens. Keep in touch & give Rob my contact info if possible — I’m hoping to include that song on my upcoming 2nd CD.
