You have to persist, and out of the sheer frustration of what you’ve been doing or you haven’t been doing you just come out the other side. Of course, when you come out the other side, you find that there’s an even bigger hill to climb than the last one.-Allan Holdsworth
You think you are a master of guitar? Well, not yet you aren’t.
Rule number 1
Those who think themselves masters are not masters. Guitar enlightenment is a journey, not a destination. Whenever you think you have mastered it all and stop your learning, you are in trouble. In my opinion, if you aren’t getting better, you are getting worse. There is always more to learn and more improvements to make. You have not reached your full potential yet. Keep going!
Rule Number 2
Lose you guitar ego. Have you ever noticed that the most egotistical players are often the worst ones to play with or listen to? They seem to have the confidence, the look, and certainly “talk the talk.” These self-proclaimed masters then proceed to warm-up with a barrage of un-strategically placed 32nd notes. Ok, maybe they are pretty good. Now let’s try to run through a few songs.
After butchering every jam and assuming that they have become the new leader of the band, these masters still don’t waiver from their cocky persona. Uh oh, another case of AIS (American Idol Syndrome).
The point is, don’t let your ego blind you and fool you to believing that you are the master. You are not always going to be the best, but you can always try your best. Learn and grow from your mistakes and your weaknesses. It’s ok if you can’t play the 4th mode of the melodic minor scale flawlessly yet. Practice it!
The Master Rule
Keep an open mind and Have fun! Remember when you were first learning guitar, every new thing you discovered was exciting and fun. Let’s keep it that way!
