Check out Dave’s song, Beautiful Mess, and keep reading learn more about this talented jazzer!
For the readers who may be unfamiliar with your work, how would you describe your music? Who are your main influences?
My playing is pretty subtle and simple. I’ve always been attracted to melody, so I tend to be on the understated and quiet side. My main influences are Ron Eschete, Bruce Forman, Charlie Shoemake, Sonny Rollins, Bill Evans, Andy Summers, and Johnny Marr.
So how did you get started playing the guitar?
I started playing the guitar at the age of 10, mainly because my neighbor played guitar. He was really cool. I wanted to be cool, so I bugged my parents until they bought me a guitar. The rest is history.
What is one influential event that helped shape your playing style, or take it to the next level?
It was my first week at the Musicians Institute. This was way back in 1987. Joe Diorio gave a solo performance. I was completely blown away. The hair on the back of my neck was standing up. After that, jazz was the thing for me.
What kind of gear are you using?
Foster Guitars
Evans Amplifiers
Describe a normal day for you. How much time do you spend practicing and playing, talking to fans, networking, etc.
I practice about two hours a day. Play anywhere from 1 to 8 times per month - it just depends. Never thought of myself as a musician with fans, but if I had fans, I’d like to talk to them. Don’t really have a network, more like an ever widening circle of friends.
What are you most proud of musically?
I’m just proud to be a musician - it’s a good thing.
Any other thoughts or words of inspirations?
Never talk badly about another musician; it’s like talking badly about yourself. I don’t know about you, but I like me.
