One thing that really stood out to me after reading an insightful review about The National Guitar Workshop on Guitar Boomer, Tips and Tricks for aging wannabe rockers who need to make up for lost time, was a quote from guitar great, David Grissom.
In case you don’t know, David is one of the top session guitar players in the country, having toured and recorded with The Dixie Chicks, Allman Brothers, Robben Ford, John Mellencamp, Storyville, Joe Ely, and Chris Isaak among many others. Oh yeah, and some of the songs he was written have been recorded by John Mayall, Shannon Curfman, Trisha Yearwood and Storyville.
So what did he say that you absolutely need to know if you are wanting to become a top session guitar player yourself?
When asked, “How do you go about getting to where you are?” his response was:
“Be ready to give up everything else.”
Now this may be a little Tyler Durden-esque, but it really rings true.
Are you willing to sacrifice any sense of normalcy in your life to be an on call musician? Are you able to leave the next day for a tour if Bruce Springsteen calls you up in the middle of the night?
You can probably kiss a regular hour schedule goodbye, making it tough on you and your family if you decide this is the path you want to take.
But if this is something you are 100% passionate about, give it your best and stay persistent. I am sure if you asked David if he loved what he does for a living, there would be no hesitation.
It’s a tough industry, especially with so many talented guitar players out there. The thing that sets the successful session guitar players apart from the non-successful is dedication, persistence, and doing whatever it takes.
