Who’s your biggest influence on the guitar?

September 28th, 2008 · Posted by blueschick · 8 Comments

I’ve been performing and playing guitar for the past 2+ decades. I’ve been fortunate living in the Northern Va. area to see legendary players like Danny Gatton & Bill Kirchen perform.

So many players have influenced me and gotten me to where I’m at now with my playing style and songwriting. For example, Robben Ford, SRV, Arlen Roth, Roy Buchanan, Clapton, Zeppelin, Jeff Beck, etc. Many female blues players as well. Sue Foley, Debbie Davies, Rory Block, Deborah Coleman, Ana Popovic and many more.

Who has influenced you and gotten you to where you are stylistically? I have to name one more. And that would be Gary Moore. He’s awesome!

Peace,

Lisa Lim

Well! I have been influenced by lots of guitar players, and I think that I’ll still be influenced by other ones.
Names I can put in my list are: Eddie Van Halen, Kirk Hammet, Dimebag Darrel, Andreas Kisser, Vinnie Moore, Steve Vai, Jason Becker, Paul Gilbert, I also like SRV and Albert Lee. You see there is a variety of guitar players in my list hehe.

Different styles determine influence according to the type of music that is preferred. Al Dimealoa, Zyke Wild, RJ Dio, Richie Blackmore, Steve Vai,Joe Satriani,Steve Morse, Dickey Betts,Buddy Guy,George Benson are a good variety to span the styles of hooking up the notes from the fretboard to the pickups. Influence is like writing, it comes from all that is heard, in bits and pieces. Anyone agree?

I agree Art. I find my inspiration and influences ever changing. In different parts of your life or even parts of the week, I often find myself being inspired by different players and different bands. It really does come and go in bits and pieces.

All sorts of musicians and their respective styles deeply moved me.
In Blues it was The Kings and Bloomfield followed by Clapton, Duane Allman & Johnny Winter.
Jimi Hendrix and Beck in the Rock Garden. Wes and Django, and oh yeah Pat Martino in Jazz.

However, being able to study with Leonid Bolotine and Mario Escudero changed me for life.
Then along came Steve Morse , Larry Carlton and Scott Henderson - truly the shit.

In closing , if your a guitarist looking for something that will push your ears , check out
    Bireli Lagrene and Jimmy Rosenberg.

    In memory of Ted Greene.

Ted Greene is probably THE number one guitar instruction guy out there in my opinion.

I have most of his books and they all are just amazing and will definitely help take your playing to new levels.

    Scott Henderson-Amazing!

    Oz Noy- Unbelievable!
