Ron Zabrocki

I am session guitarist from NY now living in CT.  I started playing at 6, sightreading right away. I could pretty much sight read anything within a few years, and that aided me in becoming a session guy later in life. I took sessons from anyone I could and was fortunate enough to have some wonderful instructors. Itook some lessons with John Scofield, Joe Pass, and Alan DeMausse. By the way, Alan turned me on to the book Zen in the Art of Archery….changed my way of thinking….check it out.
I was lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time to enter the session world.  Played on one session, did good, and the calls started. By the way, I also did ALOT of freebies. It helps get the name and rep out!
I’ve played sessions ranging from pop to jazz to classical. My forte is improvising, so that’s what I get called for mostly. Adding solo’s and fills. Colors. Whatever. I am also a busy backing vocalist. I’m called the Ronettes!

The sessions come in from all over and I never have to leave my studio! I have many clients from Nashville to China! It’s not unusual to find my schedule balancing as many as 20 sessions or more per week! (This week involved sessions for the 2008 Olympics in China, A new group on Jive, a very talented singer who also has her own TV show, my CD, a Country singer AJ Jansen, and an Oldies group.)

Seems I’m always buying and modifying my gear, but my main axes are a 1974 Strat, A 1988 Casio Midi, I believe it’s really an Allan Holdsworth Ibanez, and an Ibanez Prestige, 2550. I love Line 6 gear, but also own the full gamut of amps. From Fender to Marshall.

I’ve been doing this for many years. Now I am feeling the need for a change and am currently recording a solo guitar project. My main reason is that, even though I get to play all the time, I am RARELY allowed to play the way I believe the part should be played. There’s alot of limited imagination out there! As you can imagine…it can be quite frustrating!  Most often I hear the same complaint, and I QUOTE: “Sure, that’s some

great playing, but who am I going to get to replay the part?” It feels like I have to cater to the lowest common denominator! I want to push the guitar into the spotlight and play as best as I can, but most just want simplicity. Guess I’ll have to learn how to play standing up again!
